Brasilia (ANTARA News/AFP) - Brazil`s new president from next month, Dilma Rousseff, has a solid 62-percent popularity rating, according to a survey released Thursday -- but she trails far behind the level enjoyed by outgoing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Lula, who hands power over to Rousseff on January 1, is leaving office with a spectacular 87-percent approval rating, the polling institute Ibope said.

Rousseff is riding high in the survey in large thanks to support from Lula, whom she served as cabinet chief before going into elections that saw her easily elected as his successor in October this year.

Lula himself was constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term.

According to Ibope, public support for Rousseff`s government is running at 76 percent.

Just over half the 2,000 respondents said they expected her to greatly improve Brazil`s health system. Education, public security, and fighting drugs and poverty were all also seen as priorities.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.
