ASEAN summit to be held with public participation

Antara News, Friday, December 17, 2010

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Friday he wanted the government to involve all elements of the public in the holding of the ASEAN and East Asia summits in Indonesia in 2011, citing the need to realize a people-based ASEAN.

"The host should not just be the government, let`s involve all elements of society in all programs of the ASEAN summit," the President said when opening a cabinet meeting convened to prepare the summit. Vice-President Boediono also attended the meeting.

ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan was invited to attend the cabinet meeting at the Presidential Office in Jakarta.

President Yudhoyono said the ministries responsible for preparing and organizing the summit should therefore involve the youth, business circles and academics in the activities of the summit.

"Bear in mind that ASEAN needs to be a people-based organization,non-governmental elements should be involved since the early stages of preparations and planning of the summit.

The government must ask universities, the younger generations and other elements of society to be involved," he said.

President Yudhoyono added that those elements of society should not only be invited to attend the summit, but they must also be involved in the planning.

ASEAN, he added, will enter a new phase in 2011 as the regional organization must increasingly reach out to other communities in the world. The East Asia Summit would also enter a new phase as the United States and Russia would also be permanent participants.

President Yudhoyono also noted that Indonesia had a tradition of being a good host in organizing various international events, both for the aspects of the program and the substances of the events.

He mentioned the success of Indonesia in holding the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference which gave birth to the Ten Principles of Bandung (Dasa Sila Bandung) and the APEC Bogor Goal (1994), the Tsunami Summit (2005) and the Bali Road Map of the United Nations Framework of the Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) in 2007.

President Yudhoyono at the cabinet meeting appointed Vice-President Boediono to chair a national committee to be formed and coordinate all the programs of ASEAN Summit. The ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta would also be asked to participate in the preparations of the summit.
