Jakarta.
The Indonesian government has filed a protest with the Malaysian foreign
ministry over an advertisement for a vacuum cleaner that says “Fire Your
Indonesian Maid Now.”
In a press
release issued by the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, the ministry said it had
made the protest over a vacuum cleaner advertised by a cleaning company,
RoboVac.
Manpower
Minister Hanif Dhakiri has also voiced his protest over the commercial.
“On behalf
of the Indonesian government we would like to express our objection and protest
the advertisement that has insulted our workers,” Hanif said, as quoted by
Bisnis.com.
The
advertisement was not broadcast, but it was widely circulated on social media.
The
Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia, Herman Prayitno, said the advertisement was
insensitive and derogatory. He has asked Malaysian authorities to ban the
advertisement.
The
Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has also sent a lawyer to meet with RoboVac
representatives. It is understood the embassy is considering legal action
against the company.
The
Indonesian Embassy has also filed a report to Selangor police.
Herman said
the advertisement was regrettable especially because President Joko Widodo was
scheduled to visit Malaysia on Feb. 5-7.
