A lottery
winner in Hsinchu in northern Taiwan has decided to donate NT$20 million (US$666,000)
to various charities after he won NT$188 million (US$6.3 million), our sister
paper China Times reports.
"Upon
his request, a total of NT$8 million (US$267,000) of the NT$20 million was
donated to the Hsinchu county government for charitable purposes. He told his
wife but not the rest of his family that he won. In addition to the donations,
he also decided to spend the money on insurance and savings," said Huang
Chih-yi, general manager for Taiwan Lottery.
Huang said
the winner was one of six reported during the Lunar New Year holiday, when
lottery sales go up. He locked his ticket in a safe for a month before he
claimed the money and only recently received his winnings.
Huang
described the winner as being in his early 30s and the father of a baby girl.
In addition to his donation and investment plans, he also gave a red envelope
with NT$680,000 (US$23,000) to the shop where he bought his winning ticket.
"The
winner is a regular lottery player and always plays his wife's, daughter's and
his own birthdays as lottery numbers. He bought one ticket every week, spending
between NT$100 and NT$500 (US$3.50-$17)," Huang said. "Over Lunar New
Year, he spent approximately NT$1,000 (US$35) on lottery tickets."
Huang said
the winner has requested his name or other details not be made public.
