A
43-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in jail in absentia for
stealing €1.25m from the Dutch central bank in September 2008.

Sanjay D
left for India shortly after the theft and has disappeared without trace. An
appeal for help from the Indian authorities failed to produce results, Nos
television reported.
D, a worker
at the bank, was able to use a security code to enter the vault and then used
wire cutters to break open a money box. The court said he had ‘carefully
prepared’ the theft and had abused the confidence the bank had placed in him.
The central
bank went public with the case in 2011.
The man has
also been ordered to repay the cash. Some €59,000 was recovered from his
ex-wife in the form of 118 €500 notes.
