North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's plan to visit China has been rejected by the Chinese government due to the upcoming 18th National Congress, reports the Hong Kong-based Ta Kung Pao.

When Jang Song-thaek, uncle to Kim Jong-un and vice chairman of the nation's National Defense Commission visited Beijing in August, he expressed the young North Korean leader's wish to visit China is September, according to a report from Reuters on Oct. 3.

A source told Reuters that the request was turned down by Chinese leaders since it was not a convenient time for Kim to visit China while the Communist Party was preparing for a once-in-a-decade leadership transition and while Premier Wen Jiabao was planning a trip to Brussels for meetings with the European Union leaders, according to the source.

North Korea's missile test this April also didn't sit well with Beijing. "From China's perspective, he has to come with something positive," said the source when discussing the third nuclear test threatened by the North Korean government. The nuclear test not only angered China, the main food and oil supplier to the reclusive Stalinist state, but it was also viewed as a material threat to China's own national security due to the close proximity of the two nations.

As China is currently in the midst of a tense territorial dispute with Japan over the Diaoyu, or Senkaku, Islands and a visit from North Korean leader may only complicate the issue. The rejection of Kim Jong-un's request has not been publicized by the Chinese government. The Communist Party's 18th National Congress is scheduled to open on November 8th. There is currently time-table for Kim Jong-un to visit China.
