Report: Mugabe being treated for cancer

Stuff.co.nz, Apr 10, 2012

Reuters SERIOUSLY ILL?:
 Zimbabwe's president Robert
 Mugabe is reportedly battling cancer.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is reportedly undergoing cancer treatment in a Singapore hospital, but members of his ruling party are denying he is sick.

The 88-year-old dictator went to Singapore on March 31, and was expected to return to Zimbabwe's capital Harare on Wednesday (local time).

Aides to Mugabe said he was using the trip to oversee arrangements for his daughter to begin post-graduate study in Hong Kong, however the Zimbabwe Mail reported a senior official from Mugabe's Zanu PF party said he was undergoing "intensive treatment" for cancer.

The official also said Mugabe's family had also jetted to Singapore at the weekend to be by his side.

However, while officials in Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC party have said Mugabe's absence was "paralysing government", another Zanu PF member denied the president had a health emergency - saying he was instead enjoying an Easter break with his family.

In a statement, Mugabe's spokesman George Charamba said "the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda wishes to inform all members of Cabinet that sitting has been moved from Tuesday, 10 April to Thursday 12 April".

The health of the dictator has been in question since last year, after a US diplomatic cable from 2008 was released on Wikileaks saying Central Bank chief Gideon Gono had told then-US ambassador James McGee that Mugabe was suffering from prostate cancer and had only five years to live.

It was believed the cancer had progressed to secondary cancer and had spread to other organs.

The Zimbabwe Mail reported Mugabe's failing health has forced the ruling party to push for early elections, but according to the paper the dictator has reached a "gentlemen's agreement" to hand over power to his feared defence minister, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa received notoriety for his role in the brutal crushing of the Zapu party in the 1980s, in which thousands of civilians were killed.

“ … Here is another one. A change in what Human nature will allow for government. "Careful, Kryon, don't talk about politics. You'll get in trouble." I won't get in trouble. I'm going to tell you to watch for leadership that cares about you. "You mean politics is going to change?" It already has. It's beginning. Watch for it. You're going to see a total phase-out of old energy dictatorships eventually. The potential is that you're going to see that before 2013. They're going to fall over, you know, because the energy of the population will not sustain an old energy leader ..."
