KATHMANDU,
March 13 (Xinhua) -- Five South Asian countries are holding discussion over the
renewable energy at a workshop that kicked off in Nepali capital Kathmandu on
Tuesday.
The representatives
of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations are
holding a two-day workshop on renewable energy.
The
workshop has been organized with the aim of exchanging mutual experiences and
identification of problems about the renewable energy.
The
workshop is expected to identify the problems related to renewable energy in
the SAARC countries and their solution as well as share stories of success made
in the sector so far, sources said.
Addressing
the inaugural function, Minister for Environment Hemraj Tated said that
renewable energy should be developed and promoted.
"Nepal
is being gripped by the energy crisis and if renewable energy is developed
through various technologies then the energy shortage could be managed,"
Minister Tated said.
He added
that 45 percent of population in the nation is still deprived of electricity.
"Renewable
energy should be conserved and utilized in a proper manner," he added.
The
workshop has been organized by Alternative Energy Promotion Center and SAARC
Energy Centre.
Speaking at
the program, Executive Director of Alternative Energy Promotion Center,
Govindaraj Pokhrel said one of the best ways of addressing the problem of
crisis of energy is the promotion of the renewable energy.
The model
of biogas plant adopted in Nepal has been followed by many countries, he added.
During the
workshop, various working papers on different topics including solar system,
biogas plant, micro hydro power projects and improved oven will be presented.
The
participants of the program are scheduled to go for field inspection of the
several projects related to the renewable energy.
Representatives
from five countries of the SAARC- Nepal, India, Bhutan, Sri-Lanka and Pakistan-
are taking part in the workshop.
