Yangon, Burma. Indonesia’s foreign minister says his country is a forefront partner in Burma’s current democratization process.

Marty Natelegawa said Indonesia can help Burma strengthen its democratization efforts in the same way his country has the past decade. He spoke Wednesday after meeting his counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin and later pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Natelegawa said Burma’s government has committed to genuine peace talks with ethnic groups, free and fair elections and to release more political prisoners.

He said Indonesia can help ensure the “irreversibility in the democratization process” taking hold in Burma.

He added the countries agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and ways to increase trade, which reached $300 million this year.
