Foreign
Minister Marty Natalegawa said Indonesia had recalled the Indonesian ambassador
to Syria following escalating tensions in the Middle Eastern country.
“This shows
our concern for what happen in Syria,” Marty said on Thursday as quoted by
kompas.com.
The Arab
League recently agreed to impose economic sanctions on Syria in an attempt to
stop the violence and bloodshed in the country that shaken by the surge of
demonstrations demanding reform from President Bashar Al Assad’s
administration.
The United
Nations reported more than 3,500 people killed over the last eight months since
the demonstrations started.
Marty said
the ambassador was removed on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s instructions.
He added
that the Indonesian government had tried to bring home Indonesian citizens in
Syria, however he had yet to receive data on how many Indonesian citizens had
been sent home so far.
