The ASEAN
Blogger Community officially opened its two-day conference on Wednesday in Nusa
Dua, Bali, with the theme "The New ASEAN and its Cooperation with Dialogue
Partners".
The
conference was organized to raise public awareness surrounding the planned
creation of the ASEAN Community by 2015, the ASEAN Blogger Community says in a
press release as reported by tempointeraktif.com.
The
conference is being held at the Seni Pasifika Museum, with up to 200 bloggers
from 10 ASEAN member countries attending.
Indonesian
Communication and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring, who
officially launched the event, said he hoped it would serve as an effective
forum to express ideas regarding the implementation of the ASEAN Charter, ahead
of the creation of the ASEAN Community.
The ASEAN
Blogger Community was founded by bloggers from a number of cities across
Indonesia at a time when the Indonesian Foreign Ministry was busy working to
disseminate information on ASEAN.
It was set
up by bloggers who wanted ASEAN to serve as a forum to connect the populations
of Southeast Asia, not just government officials and elites.
