The
international community is increasing their pledges of support for the ongoing
democratic processes unfolding in Libya, spearheaded by the National
Transitional Council, which has gained government control following the
downfall of the Muammar Qaddafi regime.
This
includes ASEAN, which pledged on Monday “support for the on-going efforts
involving the National Transitional Council to promote reconciliation and build
a democratic and stable Libya”.
ASEAN
emphasized, however, that such efforts must be “in accordance with the
aspirations and wishes of the Libyan people”.
“Throughout
the crisis, ASEAN Member Countries have consistently underscored the urgent
need to protect and ensure the safety and security of civilians in Libya,”
ASEAN said in a press statement received by The Jakarta Post.
Indonesia’s
Foreign Ministry earlier said that the government similarly supports the
democratic changes in Libya.
ASEAN added
that the political process must enable Libyans the capacity to determine their
own future and that the international community must help in achieving this
goal.
“The
international community, including the United Nations, must help create
conditions conducive for the protection of civilians in Libya and the
commencement of the said political process,” the statement read.
