The United
States says it is encouraged that Myanmar's government has held talks with
democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and allowed her to travel upcountry.
Suu Kyi met
with supporters north of Yangon on Sunday and gave a short speech urging unity
and support for her political party. It was her first overtly political trip
outside Myanmar's main city since she was released in November from house
arrest.
State
Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Monday that Myanmar's government
had met its responsibilities to keep Suu Kyi safe and secure.
The U.S. is
urging the military-dominated government to reconcile with the Nobel laureate,
whose party boycotted recent elections.
Suu Kyi
last week met with a government minister, but few details of the talks have emerged.
