Hanoi. A group of American doctors will travel to Vietnam to help remove an 90-kilogram tumor from a man’s leg, medical staff said Wednesday.

The meter-wide tumor has been growing on 31-year-old Nguyen Duy Hai’s right leg for more than 30 years, despite an amputation at the knee 14 years ago.

The tumor had grown 10 centimeters in diameter over the last month, and from 80 to 90 kilograms, said Le Hoang Minh, director of Ho Chi Minh tumor hospital.

Plastic surgeon MaKay McKinnon and four other doctors will arrive in November to try to remove the growth, the biggest ever recorded in the country, Minh said.

The growth has twisted Hai’s spine and pelvis and caused problems with his breathing and blood circulation.

Doctors would need eight to 14 hours to remove the tumor. The operation is dangerous because the growth is fed by major blood vessels, Minh said.

The hospital is covering Hai’s medical expenses because his family is too poor to afford another operation.

McKinnon has conducted several operations to remove large tumors which have receive widespread media coverage in recent years.
