Malaysian politician calls for Nuke-free ASEAN

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Tue, 05/03/2011

A Malaysian politician has demanded a nuclear-free ASEAN during the ASEAN Civil Society Conference/ASEAN People’s Forum 2011 in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“I think we should have a nuclear free environment. We should focus on renewable energy. Construction of every nuclear reactor has an impact throughout the region. [The countries] are closely tied to each other geographically and therefore if there is [a reactor] that collapses, the other [nations] will be impacted.” Malaysian parliamentarian Charles Santiago said during one of the plenary sessions.

He said that currently ASEAN countries, including Malaysia, were looking into establishing nuclear plants despite the risks that surround such power generators.

Charles said that most ASEAN countries were located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and that nuclear plants are never green nor completely safe. Thus, the idea of building them in ASEAN countries was “asking for trouble.”
