TOKYO, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Monday hinted at suspending the country's plans to build new nuclear facilities following the crisis the troubled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
"We will not proceed with the plans that have been put forward until now" before the government completes a full examination of the accident and makes sure that nuclear plants in the country are safe, Kan said in a parliament session, Kyodo News reported.
Before the crisis at the crippled plant, the Japanese government had a plan of adding 14 or more nuclear power stations by 2030 in an effort to tackle global warming.
Kan said the government is committed to containing the crisis at the plant by working closely with Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant.
The severity level of the accident at the nuclear power plant had been raised by Japan's nuclear safety agency to 7, the worst on an international scale. The ranking had only been applied to the 1986 Chernobyl accident.
