President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono requested Thursday the immediate repatriation of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia who are having legal problems.
“On one hand, there is the humanitarian mission. It's not good to have tens of thousands of Indonesians that are undergoing problems. On the other hand, this is different from the repatriation of Indonesians in Tunisia, Libya and Japan in that our policies and steps need to be proper to avoid causing moral hazards. This guide is something we have to choose properly,” Yudhoyono said Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
Manpower and Transmigration minister Muhaimin Iskandar said separately that the government was trying to repatriate Indonesian workers experiencing legal problems. Currently, the number of successfully repatriated workers has reached around 1,750.
He said that some troubled migrant workers actually had the means to return to Indonesia by themselves. Thus, the ministry did not wish to throw away state money by spending money on them.
However, it has yet to obtain data on the workers who have the financial ability to return.
