International prosecutors come up with Jakarta Declaration

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sat, 03/19/2011

A four-day meeting of prosecutors from 33 countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East held in Jakarta has resulted in the formation of the Jakarta Declaration on crime fighting.

The meeting is part of the World Summit of Prosecutors, Attorney Generals and Chief Prosecutors.

“This declaration will be called the Jakarta Declaration, which is basically a form of commitment of all country members of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), especially prosecutors, in upholding the law,” Indonesia Attorney General Basrief Arief said on Saturday.

The declaration reaffirmed the commitment of all IAP members in combating and preventing trans-national crimes, he added.

He further said that the declaration would boost cooperation between IAP members in investigating, seizing assets acquired by corruption and direct cooperation between state prosecutors.

“This includes cooperation in dealing with the smuggling of people,” he said, as reported by tribunnews.com.
