Malaysian Shariah Judge Arrested for 'Khalwat'

Jakarta Globe, February 22, 2011

A Shariah Court judge in Malaysia is in hot water after he was arrested for ‘khalwat’ (‘close proximity’) to an unaccompanied female, according the country’s state news agency.

Bernama identified the accused as Penang Syariah High Court Judge Adam Tumiran, 43, and Nurul Izani Md Isa, 34.

Both Adam and Nurul, a financial advisor from Kuala Lumpur, have pleaded not guilty to committing khalwat in a house in George Town in December last year.

Bernama reported that both of the accused face fines of up to two years in jail.
