Cairo. An Indonesian woman working as a private English tutor in Cairo, Egypt, lost her job after demonstrators in Jakarta were broadcast stomping on the picture of President Hosni Mubarak.
“I was fired and told to go home by my employer because the picture of President Mubarak was stomped on by protesters in Indonesia,” Tri Mulyati, a native of Lampung, Sumatra, told state-news agency Antara.
Tri taught English for the twin children of a wealthy family in Cairo. The father is a businessman who is also a former governor of an Egyptian province.
She said her employer called her and asked her to watch the television footage of the anti-Mubarak rally. The rally took place at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Jakarta on Sunday.
“He said, 'look, Tri, Indonesian people stomped on our president. How could they do that? I hate to see Indonesians,'” Tri said. “My employers highly respect President Mubarak.”
Tri, who was paid $650 monthly, had worked for the family for two years. She said her employers were kind and generous to her. She was fully trusted to take care of the children's school performance. She even filled in for the parents when picking up the children's report cards and attending school events.
Tri is currently waiting at the Indonesian Embassy's evacuation center to be flown home to Jakarta.
