Cruise liner diverted from PNG: report

Australia Network News, Mon, 21 Feb 2011

The media has been blamed after a luxury cruise ship headed for Papua New Guinea was diverted to Indonesia at the weekend.

The boat, carrying around 1,000 tourists, was to berth in Port Moresby on Monday and then sail to one or two other ports in PNG, including Rabaul.

A Post Courier report says the decision not to go to PNG was made by the shipping company because it believes the country is at present too dangerous for tourists.

It says recent media reports about attacks on Australian aid workers in Port Moresby and Madang were behind the decision to divert the boat to Bali.

PNG Tourism chief executive Peter Vincent is angry the Post Courier ran the story and told Radio Australia the cruise ship will now arrive in the country on Thursday.
