Talks on borders with Malaysia should be accomplished: President

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that the border talks between Indonesia and Malaysia should be carried out and completed soon for the prevention of incidents that could disrupt the relations between the two countries.

"The Indonesian government is of the view that the best solution to prevent and overcome such incidents is through dialogs," the head of state said here on Wednesday.

He said that the talks should cover maritime and border areas, including areas in the Singapore strait and the Sulawesi Sea or the waters of Ambalat.

"Indonesia is of the view that the border talks could be accelerated and their implementation could be made effective," the Indonesian president said.

He said that negotiations should be based on good intention and aim so that border incidents would no longer disturb the relations between the two countries.
Yudhoyono said that it was very important to preserve relations with neighboring nations, Malaysia in particular.

"But this should not mean that we would ignore national interest, let alone if it concerned sovereignty and the integrity of the Unitary State of Indonesia (NKRI)," the president said.

He said that he had written to the Malaysian Prime Minister which basically contained Indonesia`s deep concern over the arrest of its maritime officers by Malaysia police recently.

" I also asked that talks on maritime borders should be accelerated and accomplished soon," he said.

He stressed that the negotiations with Malaysia on September 6, 2010 would reach an agreement.

Yudhoyono said that in a wider international relations, sovereignty and regional integrity of the nation was of vitally importance and must continue to be maintained.

"We have to continue to develop ourselves into an advanced, respectable and prosperous nation while maintaining relations with neighboring friendly countries," the president said.
