A multinational exercise to test the regional response to a simulated pandemic has opened in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.
The exercise running through Friday was organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the U.N. and the U.S. Agency for International Development. It is billed as the first of its kind.
The so-called tabletop exercise has participants from governments, U.N. agencies, and non-governmental organizations act out a response to a fictional pandemic outbreak.
"All of us need to be aware of the risks associated with epidemic and potential pandemics, and the tools and measures we could set in place to promptly mitigate their impacts," said ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan at the Monday opening.
