Korea Joins ASEAN 'Orchestra'

By Bae Ji-sook, Koreatimes.co.kr

Musicians from 11 Asian countries established an orchestra to play their respective traditional music together.

Sixty-six members ― one composer and five players from each country ― will be joining. Korean members will be playing the ``daegeum'' and ``sogeum'' flutes and ``ajaen'' and ``haegeum'' stringed instruments.

Park Beong-hoon, president of Chung-Ang University, and Prof. Joseph Peters of the National University of Singapore will lead them.

The orchestra will perform May 24 at the Guro Art Valley Theater, with more than 600 multicultural family members invited.

``The orchestra will be about more than playing music ― it will be an opportunity for Koreans to learn about their friends elsewhere in Asia and for Koreans to promote their country to them,'' a district official Park Jong-pyeong said.

Other countries in the orchestra are ASEAN members Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
